Dear Magus, there was a time

by Stephanie Alfaia
There was a time when we laid on your sofa,
the sound of a comedy playing in the background,
and we forgot to sleep because we lost ourselves
sharing nostalgic memories over sips of spiked beer.
There was a time when planning secret utopias,
searching for the next flight out was
all that mattered in the world.
There was a time when your fingertips
sliding up and down my thigh
caused every pore in my body to feel alive.
There was a time when your eyes were lost in mine
and the universe was never ending –
like children who believe in forever.
There was a time when every word I said
entranced you as deeply as every joke you told me.
There was a time when I would have stopped the world
to laugh with you every day.
There was a time when reality did not matter,
details were irrelevant.
There was a time when your lips
pressed desperately against mine
as the photobooth flashed once, twice,
until we remembered to breathe again.
There was a time when your heartbeat
sounded loud and clear beneath my resting ear,
our naked bodies tangled, welcoming dark night.
There was a time when my curves matched yours
and your eyes lit a fire I have never seen.
And if someone would have told me,
that in days time
I would be laying on a sofa across town,
whispering your name amid heart breaks,
I would scream.
