The cellar

by Stephanie Alfaia

A heart waits guarded in a cell
told never to open the gates
to the outside
to wait patiently until the story
has been drafted
neatly tied in reason
because love takes time.

Who built boundaries?
Why do they think hearts
can be imprisoned
and can beat safely
without being stabbed
by sharp edges
