Flowers I Stand For

by Stephanie Alfaia

Alas, Spring!
I can only find words for
And yet sometimes I can’t.
I stand here on this sidewalk
Here by these flowers I stand for
Neither wondering at the lily’s white
Nor praising the deep vermilion in the rose

I can’t stand it, but yes of course I understand it.
Everything should have meaning.
Things must stand for something.
Time is always untimely. Even skin-deep is too deep.

I say to the flower stand man, Marlin:
Beautiful flowers at your flower stand, darlin’
I’ll take a dozen daffodils, please
Place them by the altar where I’ll pray on my knees
Pray that spring springs romance
Everyday
