The Cuban Doppelgänger

by Stephanie Alfaia

Dirt roads twist and turn
Lucero trotting beneath me
We come across a little inn
Hidden in hills free from anxie-ty
Greens that flow up into the sky
Yet come short in removing
Your face from my mind.
And so I see it again,
On a Cuban cowboy
Cantering alongside a shy girl…

“Come sit with me,”
I told the Doppelgänger.
“You remind me of a lovely time,
When laughter prevailed
And I gave myself entirely….
When I became restless in love
And lost all sense of direction.
When I believed, if even for a moment
That I had found my soulmate.”
